To protect the cultural and environmental integrity of Bali, Indonesia is taking decisive actions against unruly tourist behavior, aiming to ensure that visitors honor local customs and traditions, with potential penalties for offenders, including deportation.
In recent times, Bali has witnessed an increase in incidents involving tourists, often under the influence of alcohol or drugs, engaging in actions that disturb the local community. These incidents have included inappropriate behaviors, disrespect at religious sites, and illegal drug use.
In June, the tourism board issued a warning encouraging visitors to “dress appropriately” in sacred places, respect holy sites, and avoid climbing sacred trees. Additionally, Bali has deployed its tourism civil service police unit to assist visitors and enforce a US$10 tax designed to help preserve its cultural and environmental heritage.
The regional office of the ministry of law and human rights in Bali reported that 157 foreigners were removed from the island in the first eight months of the year, while 194 individuals were temporarily detained at the immigration center awaiting deportation.
