Shenzhen's original dance drama ‘Wing Chun’ has wowed audiences in London with its second overseas tour, following its premiere in Singapore in 2023. The production is set to run for 12 performances at Sadler's Wells Theatre until September 7.

The spectacular stage production is based on the real-life figure of Yip Man who is the grandmaster of the Wing Chun style of kung fu, teacher of kung fu star Bruce Lee.

The cast, comprised of talented dancers from the Shenzhen Opera and Dance Theater, delivered a stunning performance that seamlessly integrated Wing Chun techniques into dance, showcasing the beauty and strength of this distinctive art form.

While this marks Wing Chun's London debut at Sadler's Wells, it has long been regarded as a cultural phenomenon, particularly in China, where it has shattered numerous box office records. Globally, it has been performed in 38 countries, reaching an audience of over 250,000.

Before the London premiere, China's Ambassador to the UK, Zheng Zeguang, praised the show for fostering cultural understanding. He emphasized that the performances would help UK audiences gain insights into Chinese martial arts and the values upheld by its practitioners.

The audience was captivated by the visual spectacle, showering the dance drama with high praise. Christopher Bannerman, a professor of dance at Middlesex University, noted the show's innovative approach while reconnecting with its Chinese roots. Besides enchanting cultural understanding, Stephen Barter, chairman of Wilton Capital Advisers in London, highlighted the performance's role in enhancing understanding of Shenzhen's socio-economic significance and expressed hope for a warmer relationship between China and the UK.
