Where there are Chinese people, there are Chinese restaurants. Cantonese cuisine, carried around by Cantonese people worldwide, embodies the longing for home by overseas Chinese, and stands as a symbol of Chinese culinary culture.
The Guangzhou Overseas Chinese Museum is currently holding a special exhibition ‘Overseas Chinese and the History and Culture of Cantonese Cuisine’, features almost 200 items donated by overseas Chinese. Overseas Chinese restaurant menus, antique English books that introduced Chinese cuisine, old kitchen utensils are telling the story of Cantonese cuisine's global journey.
This exhibition highlights the exquisite design of overseas Chinese restaurant menus. The menus are adorned with traditional Chinese symbols like dragons, phoenixes, bamboo, and lotuses, auspicious phrases and classical poetry.
The exhibition is composed of three sections. The first section traces the history and global spread of Cantonese cuisine, the second one shows how overseas Chinese restaurants preserved traditional dishes as well as innovated new dishes, the last section illustrates the emotional connection deep in overseas Chinese’s mind with their home country through foods. The exhibition will last until June 17th.
