With the Chinese New Year approaching, Guangzhou, one of the largest cities in the Greater Bay Area, is preparing the come back of Spring Lantern Festival which has been for decades, one of the most popular events in the city.  The 2025 Spring Lantern Festival is scheduled to open from Jan 16th to Feb 15th, cover the entire Chinese New Year. Lanterns for display are currently under construction.

The large-scale lantern ‘Phoenix Crown Light’ is a big highlight of 2025 Spring Lantern Festival, it is inspired by the headdress in Cantonese opera. The lantern measuring 20m x 17m, with 28m-long tails and 5m-high hanging tassels, the entire lantern will be as tall as a 7-floor building.

The ‘crown’ features 50 giant ‘pearls’ and 56 large ‘gemstones’. The ‘pearls’ will have colorful lights inside, while the ‘gemstones’ will feature strobe lights. It will be installed on top of the Yuexiu Park main gate, looks like the gate is wearing a crown. Phoenix crown is the headdress worn by the leading female role in Cantonese opera, which is a crucial accessory that symbolized traditional culture. The gorgeous ‘Phoenix Crown Light’ will dazzle visitors   who can take good photos with their loved ones while enjoying the stunning scenery of different giant lanterns and the rejuvenated traditional culture and customs of Chinese New Year.
