China unveils the world’s longest expressway tunnel

China has recently completed the construction of the world’s longest expressway tunnel, the Shengli Tunnel, nestled in the snow-covered mountains of the Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region. This achievement marks a significant milestone in the country's infrastructure development.

Stretching 22.13 kilometers, the Shengli Tunnel—meaning ‘victory’ in Chinese—will dramatically reduce travel time across the middle section of the Tianshan Mountains from several hours to just about 20 minutes once it becomes operational.

Designed as a dual-direction, four-lane tunnel with a speed limit of 100 kilometers per hour, it is situated at an average altitude of over 3,000 meters, in a remote and challenging environment.

The construction of this landmark project began in 2020. It is poised to enhance China’s transportation network significantly and serves as a key segment of the Urumqi-Yuli highway. The tunnel traverses a high-altitude zone with harsh climatic and geological conditions.
