Black Myth: Wukong, developed by the Chinese firm Game Science, won the Best Action Game and Players' Voice awards at The Game Awards 2024, often referred to as the Oscars of the gaming world. This achievement marks a significant milestone as it is the first time a Chinese AAA game has truly emerged on the global stage, competing alongside the best works from around the world.
The game, which took seven years to develop, reached a peak of over 2.2 million concurrent players on Steam on its launch day, August 20. Renowned for its fantastic combat, thrilling bosses, tantalizing secrets, and stunning visuals, Black Myth: Wukong was filmed at 36 scenic locations across China, with 27 sites in Shanxi, including the Yungang Grotto and the Hanging Temple in Datong, as well as Yuhuang Temple in Jincheng.
Black Myth: Wukong reimagines the classic Chinese novel Journey to the West, centering on Sun Wukong, a monkey born from a stone who acquires supernatural powers through Taoist practices. The narrative explores his past and destiny, blending elements of Chinese mythology with a dark fantasy aesthetic.
The game has garnered respect and recognition from global gamers across various aspects, filling an important gap for Chinese games in the international market. This success is inspiring ordinary developers to embrace bolder imaginations and fostering greater confidence in the Chinese gaming industry, while the world begins to view Chinese games in a new light.
