China-made ‘Land Aircraft Carrier’ wows the audience at its first public flight
: :

XPENG, Chinese electric vehicle maker, impressed the world with its innovative ‘Land Aircraft Carrier’ showcased in the 15th China International Aviation and Aerospace Exhibition, and successfully completed its first public flight on November 12, 2024.

During the air show, the flying car demonstrated a series of maneuvers, including low-altitude linear acceleration, spiral ascent, uniform-speed descent, and precise landing, all conducted autonomously.

The Land Aircraft Carrier features a six-wheel, three-axle ground vehicle, known as the mothership, which carries the flying component within it. The rear trunk boasts a large windshield, offering an expansive view. The mass-produced version showcases a cutting-edge cyber-mecha design.

To take flight, the flying component detaches from the ground vehicle to become a standalone electric vertical takeoff and landing (eVTOL) aircraft for low-altitude flights. The separation and reconnection processes are fully automated, and once detached, the aircraft’s six arms and propellers unfold for flight.

This innovative design marks China’s first manned pure electric vertical takeoff and landing aircraft intended for personal use. The land vehicle is equipped with an intelligent driving cabin for 4-5 passengers and includes an extended-range electric drive system capable of recharging the aircraft multiple times, hence the name ‘land carrier.’

The Land Aircraft Carrier is also envisioned for emergency applications, including medical rescues, obstacle crossings, highway accident responses, and high-rise evacuations.
