The 2024 Hong Kong-Macao Visual Art Biennale exhibition showcasing artworks from artists in Hong Kong and Macao has been opened at the Gongwang Museum in Hangzhou, Zhejiang province, from late October until November 15 with free admission, aiming to enhance exchanges between artists from these regions and the Chinese mainland.
Titled “Integration and Dialogue,” the Biennale features a diverse range of artistic expressions, including visual arts, intangible cultural heritage, design, technological innovation, and social design. Its goal is to create a cultural dialogue platform that highlights the development of urban culture and the unique cultural landscapes shaped by the convergence of diverse influences.
The Hong Kong section, themed "HK Snapshots & City Walks" and curated by the Hong Kong Heritage Museum, delves into the legacy of the Lingnan School of Painting and innovations in intangible cultural heritage through the concept of "street pop-ups." Meanwhile, the Macao section, curated by the Division of Visual Art of the Cultural Affairs Bureau, presents personal narratives from artists living and working in Macao, reflecting the evolving perceptions and stories of the region.
Following its run in Hangzhou, the exhibition will tour to Nanjing, Guangzhou, Shenzhen, and Beijing, remaining on display in Hangzhou until November 14. Established in 2008, the Biennale has evolved to include themes ranging from traditional art forms to contemporary and new media art, serving as a vital platform for fostering connections among young artists from the mainland, Hong Kong, and Macao.
