For the second consecutive year, China has secured the top position in the number of the world's leading science and technology clusters, as reported in the 2024 edition of the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) Global Innovation Index (GII).
This year's index utilizes data on patent filings and scientific publications to pinpoint local concentrations of cutting-edge science and technology activities. Notably, WIPO Global Innovation Index shows China has two more clusters than last year, surpassing both the United States and Germany. The findings indicate that seven out of the top ten clusters are located in Asia, with the remaining three in the United States.
At the top of the list is the Tokyo and Yokohama region in Japan, recognized as the largest global science and technology cluster. Following closely are Shenzhen and Guangzhou in South China's Guangdong Province, along with the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region, which share the second spot. Beijing ranks third, while Shanghai and Suzhou in East China's Jiangsu Province tie for the fifth place.
