“The Wings of a Man:” Kazakh riders’ romance
: :

Hasitai  / Kazakh rider

If a woman likes a man, she will hover the whip over his head, raising it high and then lowering it gently.

The Kazakhs are known as an ethnic group on horseback. When young Kazakh men and women are dating, they choose neither to drive sports cars nor go to the mall.

Hasitai  / Kazakh rider

I was born here. We have been a horseback riding people since childhood. Horses are special to us. We often describe horses as "the wings of a man."

The boy confesses his love to the girl, and the girl expresses her love with a whip. If they have mutual affection, they will ride the same horse together. Traditional customs and equestrian performances are held at Urumqi Yema Ancient Ecological Park every day.

Ms Li / Tourist from Shanghai

We just saw a boy and a girl holding hands on horseback. It feels like their love may be nurtured on horseback. After the child is born, he or she may be able to ride a horse at the age of two or three. This is a very different way of life, and it feels very interesting. Our lives in Shanghai are very far from horses. Life in Shanghai is very different from Xinjiang. We are very close with animals here. This interaction between humans and animals leaves us with a deep impression.

More than 40 riders from seven different ethnic groups showed off their skills on horses. More than 2 million tourists come here every year to learn about Xinjiang’s ethnic minorities through experiencing horse culture.

The ecological park raises 18 breeds of world-famous horse, nearly 500 in total, including the Przewalski's horse, a national first-level protected animal as rare as the giant panda. As the world's largest Akhal-teke horses base, the park boasts over 300 Akhal-teke horses, each worth up to RMB20 million.

Xiong Tao / Vice President of Yema Group

The Akhal-Teke horse is the cultural exchange ambassador of the Silk Road and the Belt and Road Initiative, it helps connect Central Asia and the cultures along the Silk Road. We hope it showcases more of the cultural heritage of different ethnic groups. We aim to deepen the interaction and integration between Xinjiang and Hong Kong. We hope to attract more tourists from Hong Kong to Xinjiang to experience its unique cultural tourism. In the future, we aspire to participate in the exchange of equestrian sports, cultural exchanges, and industrial exchanges related to horses. We seek more cooperation to elevate the horse industry to a higher platform.
