China’s total number of world heritage sites has increased to 59. The latest one is Beijing Central Axis, as passed by the 46th session of the World Heritage Committee held on July 27, 2024.

The Beijing Central Axis runs through the north and south of the old city of Beijing, evolving through the Yuan, Ming, and Qing dynasties. In 2011, the Beijing Municipal Government initiated the application process for the Central Axis as a World Heritage Site and subsequently launched a series of cultural relic protection projects and ancient building repair projects.

The UNESCO’s World Heritage Committee recognized the integrity, authenticity, and protection and management status of the Beijing Central Axis. It is the longest urban axis in the world, spanning 7.8 kilometers. The heritage area covers 589 hectares and includes 15 prominent heritage building such as the Bell and Drum Tower, the Forbidden City, Tiananmen Square, and the Temple of Heaven.

The committee praised that Beijing’s central axis has made an important contribution to the history of world urban planning, which continues to serve as a social and political center in Chinese society. The committee also highly appreciates the efforts made by the Chinese government in protecting and inheriting cultural heritage in the old city of Beijing.

Li Qun, director of the National Cultural Heritage Administration, stated, "Beijing's central axis is an important symbol that embodies the outstanding characteristics of Chinese civilization and highlights Beijing's prominent position among the world's famous ancient capitals. It has had a profound impact on the history of world urban planning and construction and is an important part of the protection of ancient capitals and sustainable development."
