The University of Macau (UM) is set to establish a new campus in Hengqin, a developing island in Guangdong Province, as part of China’s Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area Initiative. The new facility is expected to accommodate approximately 10,000 students and is slated to become operational by August 2028. The new campus, located within the Guangdong-Macao In-Depth Cooperation Zone, represents a significant step in the integration of the two regions. Covering an area of 336,000 square meters, the new campus will be nearly half the size of the existing university, and will house faculties in medicine, information technology, design, and engineering, along with two research institutes. Song Yonghua, the rector of the University of Macau, emphasized that the university will focus on cultivating exceptional talent through interdisciplinary integration in fields such as medical science, microelectronics, creative design, and financial technology. This initiative aims to position the Greater Bay Area as a leader in education. The University of Macau is currently ranked 180th in the World University Rankings 2025, published annually by the UK-based Times Higher Education. This marks an improvement from its previous ranking of 193rd place the year before.
