Since the Northbound Travel policy launched in 2023, driving from Hong Kong and Macau into mainland China has skyrocketed in popularity—transforming into one of the easiest and most preferred ways for residents to explore, work, and connect across the border.

The numbers say it all: As of April 10, 2025, more than 1 million Hong Kong and Macau vehicles have zoomed through the Zhuhai Port of the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge (HZMB)—a staggering 29.7% jump from last year. What’s more impressive? This milestone was smashed a full month earlier than in 2024, making it the fastest growth rate yet since the policy began.

The momentum isn’t slowing down. In 2025, cross-border trips have hit overdrive, with 10,000+ vehicles crossing daily on weekdays —and weekends and holidays revving up to 14,000. The recent Qingming Festival holiday saw an all-time high, with nearly 20,000 vehicles in a single day—a record-breaking feat since the policy’s debut.

What started as a bold experiment has now become a way of life. More Hong Kong and Macau residents are expanding their horizons, driving north to seize new opportunities, reunite with family, and dive into the vibrant Greater Bay Area. To keep up with demand, the HZMB checkpoint has supercharged efficiency—streamlining customs, upgrading its “one-stop” inspection system, and optimizing lane usage. Even elderly passengers and kids can breeze through formalities without stepping out of the car, thanks to new mobile inspection services.

With infrastructure and policies evolving at full speed, cross-border travel in the Greater Bay Area has never been faster, smoother, or more exciting. Buckle up—this is just the beginning!
