[Discovering Hong Kong] A glimpse of dinosaur fossils
: :

A remarkable discovery was made in the northeastern waters of Hong Kong in October 2024, when a fossil dating to the Cretaceous Period was found on Port Island. This exciting find has ignited interest and some real head-scratching among both scientists and the public. Why? Because it's the first time dinosaur fossils have ever been discovered in Hong Kong. The fossils are currently on display for the public to view at the Hong Kong Heritage Discovery Centre for free.

The fossils, thought to be from huge vertebrate animals, date to between about 145 million and 66 million years ago. They were discovered on Port Island, a place noted for its eye-catching red rock formations. While further examination is needed, the findings provide a rare look at the kind of life that boasted such large creatures and call into question what else might be entombed in the island's rocks.

The potential presence of dinosaur fossils on Port Island alerted authorities earlier this year, thanks to the Agriculture, Fisheries and Conservation Department. With this tip, experts went to Port Island and found not just any old fossils but historic bones that confirmed the researchers' earlier theories and hopes.

Although Hong Kong has a dinosaur research history, this finding marks a significant milestone. It is the first-ever dinosaur fossil discovered in Hong Kong. Paleontologists are thrilled.  But more than just thrilling, this finding also provides valuable evidence for further research into the paleoecology of Hong Kong.
