At 10 Hollywood Road in the Central District of Hong Kong lies a heritage site that pulsates with art and culture. Tai Kwun, transformed from the Central Police Station, is now a vibrant cultural hub.
Local residents and tourists alike can explore the rich history, art, and community of Hong Kong from within this former law enforcement installation.
The part of Tai Kwun that tells the prison's story, with its stark architecture, is essential to Tai Kwun's overall storytelling. It gives visitors the opportunity to get a real sense of what that existence was like, and to appreciate not only the historical significance of the penal system but also its implications for Hong Kong society today.
Besides the historical significance, Tai Kwun hopes to be open to all parts of the community and welcomes everyone to appreciate and participate in arts, heritage, and culture. One of the current exhibitions at Tai Kwun is Happy Valley: A Cultural Landscape. Its purpose is to explore and explain the intricate scenery and landscape transformations— along with the people who inhabit them and the environment they share—that together shape and define the character of Happy Valley. The exhibition will be held until February 23, 2025.
Along with the usual art gallery features, the Tai Kwun exhibition includes an interactive topographic model.
A new permanent display at the Central Magistracy is another remarkable exhibition. This display centers on the experiences of the people who passed through the Magistracy and investigates the role that the Magistracy played in Hong Kong's criminal justice system from 1841 until the building was decommissioned in 1979. This exhibition makes clear the significance of this heritage site in Hong Kong's urban history and serves as an invitation to reflect on the bigger questions of justice and equity in our society.
Moreover, Tai Kwun captivates its visitors with a combination of cultural events during major festive seasons and an array of thrilling artistic installations and configurations that ensure a very creative Chinese New Year, a very inviting Christmas, and so on. Even if you happen to be wandering around the complex on an average day, you're likely to encounter something very engaging, as Tai Kwun seems committed to making each and every one of its days a visitor delight. Interestingly, the courtyards that extend between the various buildings across the site are very nice spots for just hanging out.
