Olympic medalist Siobhan Haughey of Hong Kong became a five-time world champion on Sunday, winning the women’s 200-meter freestyle final at the World Aquatics Swimming Championships in Budapest.
Haughey secured the top spot with a time of 1:50.62, finishing 0.87 seconds ahead of first runner-up Mary-Sophie Harvey from Canada. The bronze medal was claimed by Claire Weinstein of the United States, who recorded a time of 1:51.62.
Haughey's performance ranks just behind her own world record set in 2021 in Abu Dhabi and Swedish swimmer Sarah Sjöström’s time of 1:50.43 from 2017. She now holds four of the five fastest times in the event's history.
Haughey was also awarded the ‘double crown’ for clinching the gold medal in the 200m freestyle at all three stops of the World Cup and winning it again in Budapest.
With this victory, the four-time Olympic medalist from Hong Kong has achieved four world crowns in the 200-meter freestyle, in addition to another title in the 100-meter event.
