[Cultural Hong Kong] Oi!: An art cluster that sparks creativity
: :

Built with distinctive red brick and a tile roof, Oi! is a dynamic organization dedicated to promoting arts and culture, situated at 12 Oil Street in North Point, Hong Kong. Its name cleverly connects to its location, as ‘Oi!’ sounds similar to the address in Cantonese, serving as a call to action and a platform for individuals to pursue their artistic dreams.

Housed in a stunning historic Grade II building with red brick and a tile roof, originally built in 1908, Oi! has been transformed into a vibrant space where art and creativity converge.

As a hub of creativity, Oi! encourages the community to engage with art in meaningful and transformative ways. This innovative venue supports visual arts by providing a space for exhibitions, forums, and a variety of art-related activities.

Among its current highlights is the exhibition ‘Oi! Onsite: The Stillness Between,’ featuring artist Chan Sai-lok. Utilizing Chinese aesthetic perspectives and ink art techniques, Chan narrates community stories and explores the urban landscape surrounding Oi!, inviting viewers to appreciate the beauty of everyday life through his visual and textual storytelling.

Another noteworthy exhibition is ‘Oi! Onsite: ORGANs,’ created by artist Inkgo Lam. This installation represents the five major organs of the human body—heart, liver, spleen, lungs, and kidneys—each linked to vital functions like activation and absorption. Lam envisions the century-old Oi! Warehouse as a living entity, reflecting its architectural themes of separation and connection.

Both exhibitions are open until February 9, 2025, offering a unique opportunity to experience art that resonates with the community and its history. Do check it out!
