Let’s get ready for Hong Kong’s Fire Dragon Dance in September
: :

The excitement is building up as this year’s Mid-Autumn Festival approaches! Mark your calendars for September 16th, when the vibrant Fire Dragon Dance in Tai Hang of Hong Kong kicks off.

This enchanting event takes place over three consecutive nights, starting on the night of the Mid-Autumn Festival. The charming neighborhood of Tai Hang will come alive as dancers parade with a magnificent fire dragon made of tens of thousands of incense sticks, weaving through the streets and alleys and creating a stunning spectacle. For the best views, head to Wun Sha Street, where you can fully appreciate the lively atmosphere.

The Fire Dragon Dance boasts a rich history, first performed in 1880, making it over 140 years old.  Whilst in the past, villagers performed the fire dragon dance wishing the plague vanished, the ritual continues to be honored by Tai Hang’s residents each year up to now.

In June 2011, Tai Hang Fire Dragon Dance was successfully inscribed onto the Third National List of Intangible Cultural Heritage by the State Council of the People’s Republic of China, to mark a major milestone in preserving and promoting local heritage in Hong Kong.
