James Wong, once a prominent cultural figure in Hong Kong, left an indelible mark with his talent in lyrics, music and arrangements. His life coincided with several important stages in the development of Hong Kong after the war, and had a significant impact on the formation and changes of Hong Kong's popular culture. An exhibition of ‘A laugh at the world’ is organised to pay tribute to James Wong and to commemorate the 20th anniversary of his passing, which is hold at Thematic Galleries 1 & 2, Hong Kong Heritage Museum during 17.07.2024 - 10.02.2025 for free.

Coinciding with pivotal stages in Hong Kong’s development, James Wong has made a significant impact on the formation and changes of Hong Kong’s popular culture. Throughout his career, he has contributed to a vast array of works, all characterised by their beautiful melodies and profound resonance with the people. The exhibition link various chapters of James Wong’s life with four of his songs: from the beginning of his journey “Below the Lion Rock” to the heyday of Hong Kong’s pop culture epitomised in “It’s him, you and me”.

James Wong was good at writing lyrics, composing music, scoring, writing columns, making movies, advertising creations and stage performances. His creative pursuits extend beyond just music, encompassing columns, filmmaking, ad creation, and stage performances, and close to the hearts of the people. This exhibition serves as a testament to the cultural integration in Wong’s works, showcasing how he translated traditional content into contemporary pop culture creations.
