Hong Kong's iconic vintage Leyland Olympian bus returns to the limelight

Great news for bus lovers! The legendary Leyland Olympian 11-meter bus, affectionately known as the “Daai Sik Gwai” (Big Eater) has been restored for celebrating 45th anniversary of Hong Kong’s Citybus Company.

This iconic bus, a staple of the 1990s, made its debut at City One Shatin, the birthplace of Citybus. This bus witnessed the company’s shift to franchised services and the introduction of cross-border routes, and many other significant milestones in Hong Kong's public transportation history.

Citybus maintains a fleet of 8 classic buses, each representing different periods in the company's history. The engineering team has successfully preserved these classic buses to a standard that allows them to carry passengers. They are now showcased as 1:1 models for public viewing. But under the regulations, these classic buses cannot operate on the roads or carry passengers, as their registrations were cancelled upon retirement.

Richard Hall, Managing Director of Citybus, expressed his hope to collaborate with the government to explore possibilities for allowing citizens and tourists to ride these classic buses, enabling them to relive the rich history of Hong Kong's public transport.
