M+, Asia’s global museum of contemporary visual culture in the West Kowloon Cultural District of Hong Kong, is presenting the first full-scale retrospective of renowned Chinese-American architect Ieoh Ming Pei from now till Jan 5, 2025. There is a series of public programs throughout the exhibition period, including guided tours, conversations, film screenings, and workshops.

 

Pei’s high-profile projects were iconic landmarks, including the National Gallery of Art East Building in Washington, D.C., modernisation of the Grand Louvre in Paris, Bank of China Tower in Hong Kong, and Museum of Islamic Art in Doha, which solidified Pei’s position in architectural history and popular culture, and his transcultural vision laid a foundation for the contemporary world. You might also find it interesting to learn that the Sunning Plaza in Causeway Bay,  aother iconic Hong Kong location also designed by Pei.

 

The exhibition takes a close look at Pei’s life and work through six areas, and it will consist of over 300 items on display, most of which have never been exhibited before, and featured a rich selection of drawings, sketches, videos, models, photographs, and other archival documentation, many of which will be on view for the first time.  

 

Pei was regarded as one of the greatest architects of the twentieth and twenty-first centuries. Pei was born in Guangzhou, China and later moved to live in Hong Kong until he was age 10. Pei was awarded numerous honors because of his spectacular architectural designs, including Pritzker Architecture Prize, which has often been called the Nobel Prize of architecture.
