What factors to decide the best places to live? The latest Expat Insider 2024 report released by the global expat community InterNations, ranks it by analyzing factors such as Quality of Life, Ease of Settling In, Working Abroad, Personal Finance and the Expat Essentials Index (which covers housing, administration, language and digital life).
China ranks 19th on the list, whilst Hong Kong comes in at 21st, has seen a significant improvement in its ranking from last year, surpassing Singapore(30th). Hong Kong's performance in the five factors assessed has improved, particularly in Personal Finance and Quality of Life. “Culture and Welcome” index rose to 21st (33rd last year), “Finding friends” rose to 20th (22nd last year).
Despite the high cost of living in Hong Kong, 84% of expats believe their disposable household income is sufficient for a comfortable life. Additionally, 42% of expats in Hong Kong earn an annual income of US$100,000 or more, compared to 20% globally.
Many expats cited financial reasons, retirement, or the desire to improve their quality of life as reasons for moving to the Central American country. Panama, moving up from third place last year, claimed the top spot this year, with 82% of expats reporting satisfaction with life there.
